Sunday School -- Journey 252!

Sunday at a Glance...

What happens down at Journey 252?  Kids are challenged every Sunday at Journey 252 to trust God, make wise choices, and build lasting friendships. Here's what a typical morning at Journey 252 looks like.

Welcome:  Each child is greeted at their classroom by their small group leader. Kids participate with their small group in an activity meant to introduce the one TRUTH, or bottom line, we want kids to walk away with and remember that morning.

Large Group Environment:  Shortly after arriving, kids are moved to their large group environment where they participate in worship where they are encouraged to sing as loud as they want and tell God how much they love Him.  We then hear the Bible story.  We use a combination of video drama and live story telling--anything that makes the Bible come to life.

Small Group Environment: After participating in Large Group, kids travel back to their small group classroom where their leaders help them understand how the day's bottom line can fit into their everyday life. Small group leaders at Journey 252 are serious about having fun   with kids and passionate about teaching the TRUTH.  We want kids to see how God's word fits into their lives, to learn how to talk to Him, and to build friendships that will last.

Curriculum

We use Orange 252 curriculum for K-5th graders.  The curriculum is built around the Three Basic Truths:

1. Wisdom: I need to make the wise choice.

2. Faith: I can trust God no matter what.

3. Friendship: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

The Three Basic Truths are amplified through 36 monthly virtues (such as kindness, generosity and faith) and 150 Bible stories. Every week there is a key TRUTH or bottom line that we drive home.  It's the ONE THING we want kids to understand and grab onto during their hour at Journey 252.

Parents

The average child will spend over 1000 hours every year in school and they will spend less than 50 hours in church.  The average parent has more than 10 times the opportunities to discuss spiritual issues in one year than a church leader does in 10 years. The church has limited potential to impact the heart of your child. WHAT HAPPENS AT HOME in many ways is more important than what happens at church!

To help partner with our parents, we have available God Time cards (see God Time under kids tab), so kids can connect with God while reinforcing each week’s lesson.  To additionally encourage our students, when they turn in 4 God Time weeks to their teacher, they receive a free smoothie from the coffee shop!!

If you would like to further connect with the lessons, and reinforce the virtues at home.  You may download a smartphone app called: PARENTCUE

Additionally, you may connect at orangeparents.org where you will find helpful articles, parent support, and podcasts.

Volunteers

Every Sunday, volunteers show up and work together in their unique role to create an amazing environment for our kids. Journey 252 is totally volunteer fueled and wouldn't exist without the leadership and expertise of our volunteers. Each volunteer has a part to play on our team.  Some of the volunteer roles are:

Small Group Leader: serves as the primary role model for the same group of eight to ten kids on a weekly basis.

Registration: welcomes children into a classroom and helps to get them checked in, they also greet new families and guide them through the entire process of checking into a class.

Production: We have a team of volunteers on stage and behind the scenes that create our large group environments every Sunday.

AWANA - Fun, Games, Bible

The last AWANA night for this school year was May 2, 2012.

  • What is AWANA? In their own words "Awana is an international, Bible-centered children's and youth ministry providing local churches with weekly programs for students age 3 through 6th Grade. Our goal is to equip churches to reach kids, and their families, with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him. The acronym Awana comes from the first letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed as taken from 2 Timothy 2:15."
  • We will be partnering again in 2012-2013 with Our Father's Lutheran Church , who will be hosting AWANA again.  Click on link for directions.
  • AWANA will run most Wednesdays through the school year from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
  • There will be a fee to cover costs but offer scholarships so that all kids can participate.
  • Contact the office by email or call the office at 763-477-9126 to register or get details.
  • We need more leaders and helpers!  Thank you to our wonderful, dedicated leaders for making Wednesday nights in 2011/12 FANTASTIC! Let's do it again.

Good News Club®

The Good News Club meets in Rockford Elementary School from 3:00-4:30 on Thursdays in the classroom of Lora Lakin (room 507).  There are currently 20-30 kids/week, and plenty of room for more. This is a free afterschool program!!

The Good News Club® is a ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship® in which trained teachers meet with groups of children in schools, homes, community centers, churches, apartment complexes, just about anywhere the children can easily and safely meet with their parent's permission. Each week the teacher presents an exciting Bible lesson using colorful materials from CEF Press®. This action-packed time also includes songs, Scripture memory, a missions story and review games or other activities focused on the lesson's theme.

As with all CEF ministries, the purpose of Good News Club is to evangelize boys and girls with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and establish (disciple) them in the Word of God and in a local church for Christian living.

We currently have the following needs:
•       Team leader (all volunteers are in place and know what to do, but we need a contact person between volunteers, kids, school just to make sure everything keeps running smoothly.
•       A driver-drop kids off at the Corcoran Trailer Park (Maple Hills Estates). Gas and van are provided.  Pick kids up at 4:30 p.m., back to school by 5:20 p.m.
•       Financial Support.
Please be praying with us:
•       To see God's kingdom come in Rockford Elementary as it is in heaven.
•       To expand to rent two classrooms and divide the kids (K-2 and 3-5 grades).
Contact: Chris Adams at 612.978.1231 if you are interested in getting involved, or having your child attend.  You can find stories about Rockford and other ways God is moving at Chris’ blog:  http://heavenislike.wordpress.com/
